#2 How to spin F: Exaggeration
F a vehicle of expression transforms the composer’s vision and compels him to magnify the perspective of a novice. The proof is in the music. (2 of 14 )
One way to make this fast: describe a concert ending when an audience leaves their seats. Spot the phrase in italics and hear the music for 20 “smart reader” points.
It begins for a young intelligent visionary this way:
Far from being normal in the privacy of an energy-charged single-seat setting of a theater a heartbeat feels strong enough to provoke “What the ‘F’?” glances from surrounding spectators. For anyone else the final vibrations of sound from the orchestra would simply end and either be memorable or fleeting.
Enduring the chaotic sound of orchestral practice phrases and tune-up notes is oddly foreshadowing. So at this point, before anyone gets too carried away thinking that the ‘F’ reference is becoming overused, bear in mind it is part of a progression. The character will be cast in a more emphatic and musically productive role long before the end of this newsletter series.
Back to the point however; the effect of overwhelming newness is predominant when questions routinely lacking answers flood through the thoughts of the inquisitive newcomer. Experiencing the element of surprise in big city life increases its allure and everything is magical. The anticipation is both exciting and frightening and every derivative of those two adjectives compounds even normal occurrences. It is an exaggeration of perception. The dynamic ring of all music interpretation and invention is engulfing like the crescendo of an oceanic wave.
The storehouse of creative drive and inspiration dwarfs the fondest memory of any leisurely evening. Predictability and familiarity are far distant from anything presently happening. The seeds of aspiration are planted in an exceptionally fertile environment and once more ‘F’ imbues the excitement of the moment with an unusual complexion. Just listening to the orchestra transcends anything and everything even remotely ordinary. The only music ever performed, mastered and enhanced with wings on every note and phrase has swept away all notions of dullness taking over and there will be no turning back.
Persistence of a tenacious earworm is in the phrases of music parading and infiltrating every whim and compulsion. It provides a perfect opening for an unnatural inspirational force to slip through and aggrandize the validity of its purpose, but to keep from jumping too far ahead at this point it should only seem as though nothing too far out of the ordinary has taken place or is taking place. The enthusiastic novice on a quest for a broader comprehension of life seated as a ticket holder in the hall is special in itself.
However, as indicated in the first paragraph, enough time has passed and ‘F’ the character is positioned to graduate from primitive to something much more complex. This concert hall exhibition of orchestrated timbres has left its impression suggesting that a world of vibrancy and promise means anything is possible. The task is passed onto newsletter three to describe how true and incalculable that can be.
The ‘F’ Game
If there is a solution, it is a puzzle. Without one - it’s just a mess.
